PITTSBURGH (AP) - Evgeni Malkin continued his strong preseason with a goal and two assists and the Pittsburgh Penguins had four power-play goals in a 4-1 preseason win over the Minnesota Wild 4-1 on Saturday.
Defenseman Joseph Morrow, Pittsburgh’s first-round draft choice, had a goal and an assist, and Pascal Dupuisand Brian Strait also scored for the Penguins, who have won all three of their preseason games. Pittsburgh’s Brad Thiessen made 16 saves.
Eric Nystrom had a third-period goal for the Wild, who had won their first three preseason games.
Consol Energy Center was filled by thousands of youth hockey players as part of the Penguins’ program in which they distributed 18,000 free tickets to area youth.
Malkin missed the final three months of last season with a torn ACL, but the former NHL scoring champion has five points in two preseason games.
Thank you Caroline and 58reasons for sharing this article at Yardbarker!
We all think Kris is definitely a Norris Candidate and this article lists some excellent points to validate such consideration for the award.
5. Kris Letang, Penguins
Kris Letang definitely took a big step in the right direction last season, exceeding his previous career-high in points by 17. Some may not see Letang as a legitimate Norris candidate; but if last year was any indication, the more Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin stay healthy, the more it will benefit Letang. (Without No. 87 and 71, Letang had 9 points and a -8 rating in 29 games. With the dynamic duo? Letang recorded 41 points and a +23 rating in 53 games.) Defensively, Letang has improved leaps and bounds from previous years. If Letang puts up 60-plus points, for example, why can’t he be in this discussion?
You may have read and heard about this already from the Pens Report this morning, but Kris was not on the ice at practice today because of a migraine.
We all hope you are feeling better Kris !
On how he feels about going into the first pre-season game:
It’s quick, but we had the chance to have regular scrimmages and the Black and Gold Game, so everybody got a bit of good timing back. It will be a real good first test and a chance for the players.
On what it is going to feel like playing again:
When you don’t play for a long time like this, it’s about timing on the ice and where the players are standing. Your vision, your timing – everything needs to be there and ready for the season.
On the younger players:
It’s a training camp; everybody wants to make an impression. It’s important to go out there and play and not think too much.
On the game being against Detroit tonight:
They’re a great team every year. It’s a great organization, so it’s always fun to play against them.
On being considered one of the “older guys” at camp:
No, I don’t think so. I’m one of the youngest here. There’s new guys and guys who have been here 5, 6 years. I’m here to help and it’s fun playing with all these guys and it’s going to be a good time.
On working on and improving the power play:
It’s a new setup; we’ve got new players. I think playing tonight will work on everything we talked about. There are a lot of players to work on the penalty kill. There are some things that we would love to change and some things we have to work on.
