Penguins defensemen Letang, Martin embrace heavy workload (TribLive)

A great read about the roles of Kris Letang and Paul Martin, specifically highlighting the workload that they shoulder especially this late in the season and potentially for the upcoming postseason. Here’s a highlighted quote, please click the link at the end to go to the full article.

Letang and Martin likely will be on the ice more than ever this spring.

They don’t mind the work.

“That’s what you try to build during the season,” Letang said. “So when it comes time for the playoffs, your body is ready for those minutes.”

Martin is actually playing a tick less than usual. He said the Penguins’ primary pairing will be in top form when the postseason begins.

“We like being matched up against that top line all the time,” he said. “We’re fine.”

Letang, who Agnew said should be the favorite for the Norris Trophy, played more than 31 minutes Saturday in Arizona, when Ehrhoff’s injury forced the Penguins to play with five defensemen. It might have been a preview of things to come.

“I was aware of it,” Agnew said. “We knew when (Ehrhoff) went down that Kris was playing more than 30 minutes. It’s absolutely nothing that he can’t handle. He and Marty, they’re special.”
