Coach Mike Johnston is a firm believer — perhaps more than most coaches — that offense in the modern NHL must be driven by defensemen who can get the puck quickly and decisively up the ice.

“He wants us to be moving, always supporting the attack,” Letang said. “These days, guys are bigger, faster, better. The systems are better. It’s tough to score goals. He wants to make sure we get involved and we outnumber the other team.
