Penguins can’t hold the Capitals in DC, lose 5-2
The Capitals bought the offense, outscoring the Penguins by 3. They out-shot the Penguins by 1, 30-29 Capitals. It was an intense, high energy game, with the Penguins looking a bit over matched. Fleury was a great behind the net, but the Capitals took advantage of their power plays (scoring on both). Final score was 5-2 Capitals in regulation.
Snap Shots: Caps 5, Pens 2
*Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury surrendered a goal to Alex Ovechkin just 35 seconds into the game. Though the stage was set for the bottom to fall out, Fleury rebounded. He was pressured early, late and all in-between. Fleury made 25 saves, but most of them were high-quality scoring chances. Fleury gave his team a chance to win. That’s all you can ask of your netminder.
*We’ll end this on a congratulatory note. Ovechkin, in dramatic and fitting fashion, scored a beautiful goal just 35 seconds into the game to net his 1,000th career NHL point. Ovechkin has been a joy to watch for the past 10-plus years. Love him or hate him, you can’t deny his talent, passion and brilliance on the ice. Ovechkin is an amazing generational player and here’s hoping he makes it to 2,000.
